Matthew Hoffman from Rochester Institute of Technology talks about the possibilities of a garbage patch in the Great Lakes. He estimates there are 10,000 metric tons of plastic waste entering the Great Lakes every year, which is approximately the size of 28 Olympic sized swimming pools.

During manufacturing, plastic is embedded with various chemicals and as the plastic is in the environment other chemicals will adhere to it. Dr. Sherri Mason expands on the concept of the “Poison Pill” where aquatic life in the Great Lakes will ingest plastic and absorb the chemicals from the plastic.
